For any electrically competent person assigned responsibility as an LV AP, working on, or near isolated electrical equipment or systems, safe systems of work, written procedures & permit systems, compliant equipment, safe isolation and lock-out tag-out procedures, safe points of isolation, correct selection of
compliant GS38 voltage indicators. Permit writing, RAs and practical assessment. The information required to carry out the role of an AP.

  • Course Duration: Two days.
  • Delivery: Classroom-based.
  • Assessment Method: Multi-choice end point assessment paper, practical safety paperwork issue and safe isolation assessment.
  • Accreditation: Independently CPD certified, learners will receive a CPD-certified certificate of attendance from GCS Doncaster Ltd upon completion.

Course Aims & Objectives

To enable delegates to understand the legal requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 in respect of the safe isolation of electrical equipment and competence to prevent danger and injury. They provide the information required to carry out the role of LV AP. Understand how to assess electrical competence and ensure the necessary safe systems of work are implemented before working on or near electrical equipment or systems.

Course Content

  • The dangers of electricity.
  • The regulations, their purpose, scope and legal standing.
  • The need for safe systems of work, written procedures, and permit systems.
  • The requirement for ‘competence in electrical work’, roles and duties of personnel.
  • A full understanding of the requirements of GS 38 & HSR25 (EaWR1989).
  • Identification of safe points of isolation.
  • Lock off devices.
  • How do we carry out the safe isolation of electrical circuits, and what is the process to achieve it?
  • Safe isolation demonstration and workshop.
  • Practical exercise in safety documentation writing, issue and safe isolation, practical assessment of each learner.
  • Q&A.
  • End-point assessment – close.
  • Comprehensive course handout, including a copy of HSR25 & GS38.
  • Optional module to deliver client-specific electrical systems and processes.
  • *A GS38-compliant Voltage indicator & proving unit plus a LOTO kit can be provided for each delegate attending this course at an additional cost.

Delivery

This course is delivered by a time-served electrical engineer with over thirty-five years of contracting experience. Over twenty years of that being a Director and Electrical Duty Holder for an FTSE100 PLC and an Electrical Utility Supplier, a former NIC EIC QS & PDH. a Member of the IET, a licentiate of City & Guilds and holder of the Level 3 award for Education & Training.
